1. How to put a sparkle in your eye

I visited an old friend last weekend and was surprised to see a big difference in him.

For years, he's been talking about doing something with affiliate programs, but the problem is that he already has a tiring full-time job and other commitments.

So although he's tossed around business ideas lots of times, he's never managed to find the time to make a start.

Until very recently, that is.

This time when I visited him, he couldn't wait to show me what he's been working on. He had sheets of paper covered with his keyword research and pencil sketches of the structure of his site. He's identified a niche that looks as though it will be profitable. He has a main theme all worked out, and ideas for sub-niches he can explore...

He's not an expert in the niche he's chosen, but he does have good knowledge about some closely related niches that overlap this one, so he'll have a flying start when he's researching articles.

We talked about experiments he could do at home and put on videos, and local experts he could find to interview.

He's planning to create a really useful site containing articles that other sites will want to link to. At a time when the Internet is becoming more and more overloaded with junk, it's really good to see someone who's creating a sound business plan.

He's studied his potential competitors and spotted weaknesses in the material they're offering. He's confident he can provide a better service.

It was fascinating to watch him talk about it.

Here's a guy who's normally too tired after a hard day's work to get excited about anything. Now, here he was with a gleam in his eye, obviously highly energized by his new project. It was delightful to see.

For years, he's watched Joanna and me build our online business and improve our lifestyle. However, until now, he's thought he was too busy to do stuff like that.

Suddenly, he's discovered he has hours that he didn't know he had.

Why? Not because of some time management guru's advice - nothing like that.

It's simply because, now that he's actually taken the first step, he's finding that planning and building his online business is so darn INTERESTING that it's no trouble at all for him to make time for it.

I think there's a really important lesson here.

If you still haven't taken the first step in affiliate marketing, do what my friend did and take the first step. Actually DO something.

Or if you've just done a few little bits and pieces here and there, make a decision now to build a high quality, USEFUL site that adds value to the Internet. Build a proper business that will improve your lifestyle.

You'll probably find, like my friend has, that building something genuinely useful will give you a heap of new energy.

4. Crackdown on deceptive advertising

I hope you already know this...

Whether you're an affiliate, an affiliate network or a vendor, you're not allowed to use deceptive advertising. Duh!

The Florida Attorney General's office is planning to sue websites that use deceptive advertising. It's part of a crackdown on all the players who support and benefit from misleading online ads.

Let's hope this will play a small part in helping clean up the Internet. What on earth took them so long?
