8 ways Rupert could increase his monthly commissions
… and 2012 revenue results

Rupert has just scratched the surface of what’s possible with his affiliate site.
For example:
1. Rupert hasn’t written even one article for a newsletter or article directory, or related website. This is a powerful way of enhancing your reputation, attracting visitors to your site and adding long-lasting links to your site (when the newsletters are archived online).
2. He hasn’t begun his own mailing list. Site Build It! provides a high-quality product which makes this easy. MailOut permits you to collect subscriptions via your site, import lists, build a quality HTML ezine (with automatic text translation), SpamCheck, sophisticated background bounce-management and the entire thing is built to keep spammers out (VERY important for a mail server – all the big ones are having HUGE troubles with AOL, Yahoo! etc.), stats, etc. Rupert should be capturing all that traffic for repeat exposure.
3. He hasn’t begun his own newsletter (same benefits as above).
4. He has done only minimal experimenting to see if he can raise his conversion rate. Experienced marketers continually tweak their sites, changing headings, text, graphics, products they promote etc., looking for ways to encourage more of their visitors to buy.
5. Apart from getting listed in Yahoo! and DMOZ.org, he has very few links to the site. He hasn’t telephoned even one web site owner to try to arrange reciprocal links. Getting links is important and worth spending time, energy and money on. It should be part of your marketing strategy but definitely not your sole marketing strategy.
6. He hasn’t offered any information via an autoresponder. A seven-part autoresponder course would give him seven chances to achieve a sale instead of only one.
7. He hasn’t expanded the list of products he is promoting to include new merchants. For example, although MusiciansFriend’s exclusivity clause forbids him from promoting direct competitors, he could offer his visitors a book on how to be a DJ and he could also promote music magazines.
8. He hasn’t built a large site. Building a large, comprehensive site, the best in your field, makes it harder for newcomers to compete with you.
To sum up, while Rupert is pleased with the income DJ-Tips-and-Tricks.com is producing, there’s plenty of potential for more.
As I write this, Rupert is busy expanding his second Site Build It! site. The latest monthly commission check, for $698.20, shows us that he’s on the right track.
I’ve promised Rupert a bonus when one of his sites earns its first $1,000 commission check. I’m sure he’ll receive it very soon, thanks to Site Build It! [UPDATE: He did!]
UPDATE, June 2012
Rupert moved on years ago. Another assistant manages the site now as a little part-time project.
It’s a much more competitive niche now – probably because of this 9-year-old case study! Also, my assistant has been busy lately on other projects. You can neglect a good site for months and often get away with it, but eventually Google seems to prefer sites that keep adding fresh content and keep getting new links.
Several years after it was created this site keeps earning a handy monthly income. Here are some recent monthly earnings from AdSense and affiliate commissions…

[UPDATE, 2013: Sadly, after more than a decade, this affiliate marketing experiment has ended. It’s my fault. I didn’t monitor this experiment closely enough. The latest assistant who was supposed to be working on this site goofed off and eventually quit. You can’t do that and get away with.]
Second affiliate experiment tops $3,000 a month
He did it! Rupert’s second affiliate marketing experiment has topped $3,000 a month in commissions and AdSense earnings. Read how the site does it:
