Is this going to be a new domain name goldrush?
Registration of the new .ME top-level domain names will be open to the public on July 17 at 4pm GMT (noon EST).
I'm sending this newsletter now so you'll have time to do some research and brainstorming and come up with quirky, memorable names before open registration begins.
The .ME country code was assigned to Montenegro after it gained its independence in 2006.
Companies which own trademarks were given an early start to register .ME names. For example, Google has registered Google.me.
The .ME names are being marketed at people who want to own a YourName.me domain, but I reckon their biggest potential is in quirky, memorable names - if you're quick and lucky enough to grab one.
At $19.99 a year, with a minimum two-year period, the .ME domains are fairly expensive. If you just want to put your own name in a domain you might be better off grabbing the cheaper .COM or .NAME extension.
However, if you're good at coming up with ideas for unusual, brandable domain names, such as Sue.me, Date.me or Marry.me, $19.99 looks like a fantastic bargain.
Unfortunately, some "premium names", such as buy.me, rent.me, kiss.me and marry.me have been kept aside to be auctioned.
Depending on how inventive you are, I think there are still LOTS of possibilities.

I'm NOT saying all those names are available. They're just ideas to jump-start your brain. You can do a whois search here to see if the names you want are available...
Anyone can register a .ME domain. You're not allowed to register a name which is already trademarked.
All the .ME registrars I looked at seem to be sticking to the $19.99 price. Dynadot.com has them fractionally cheaper for bulk buyers - people who spend more than $500 a year.
Dynadot - a registrar which I normally like - told me that orders placed before the launch date will be put on hold.
"Our system will automatically try to
register the domain when ME launches ...
If the domain cannot be registered,
you will receive an account credit."
Whoa! You don't just want a CREDIT. If you place an early order and miss out, you want a REFUND. Perhaps that's what they mean? Perhaps not?
Whichever registrar you choose, take the time to read the small print, especially if you're getting in before the Thursday launch.

The most obvious names are sure to disappear really fast. The big winners here are going to be the people who are imaginative - and fast. Your best bet may be to come up with something really unusual, or perhaps some word combinations.
