How to fool spam filters

By Allan Gardyne | Published 06/20/2004 | Ezine publishing |

Bad ISPs, mail services, and filtering companies are acting irresponsibly

You want to fool spam filters? It's not quite as simple as that.

The problem: Bad ISPs, mail services, and filtering companies are acting irresponsibly.

Most ISPs are quite responsible and have whitelisting procedures that work. However, some don't seem to care if they harm small businesses.

Hotmail, for example, filters email sent by legitimate business - NON-spammers like you - and doesn't have the decency to send a bounceback to let you know that your legitimate business email has been trashed.

  • If you have a newsletter, are ALL your subscribers seeing it? Not likely!
  • If a potential customer requests information via email, is it received? Do you even know?

It's a problem faced by ALL small businesses and online newsletter publishers.

So we have to do more than try to fool spam filters.

Here are three things you can do:

1. Try to fool spam filters

You can use the free SpamCheck tool to check your emails before sending them. This is useful, but it's only a partial answer. The problem is bigger than that.

2. Educate your customers and subscribers

If your legitimate business emails and newsletters aren't reaching your customers and subscribers, tell them who's to blame - irresponsible ISPs, mail services, and filtering companies. SiteSell has figured out a good way to spread the message. You can help yourself to free templates here.

3. Join the "I'm Mad As Hell And Not Going To Take It Any More" Campaign

The President of SiteSell, Dr Ken Evoy, is sick and tired of bad ISPs, mail services, and filtering companies that don't allow legitimate, opt-in email to go through.

"The future of how you work online is at stake," Ken says. "Your business is at risk.

"And it's time to start fighting back, or we're all going to be hurting. Heck, many already are.

"The goal? Responsibility and accountability by ISPs, mail services, and filters that currently damage our business, don't care, and won't do anything about it."

Ken IS doing something about it. He's launched a Deliver My Mail campaign.

He's threatening a class action lawsuit on behalf of small Internet businesses that have been damaged by ISPs who are too careless to differentiate between legitimate, customer-requested email and spam.

He's collecting evidence and spreading the word: Legitimate, opt-in email must go through.

"The first goal is cooperation and working together to beat spam," Ken says.

"We escalate, as necessary to convince the bad ISPs to come on board.

"The class action is our option of last resort if the bad guys simply don't get the message that we must all be working together on this," Ken says.

Don't merely try to fool spam filters. Start fighting back.
